Frequently Asked Questions about the Academic Planning Process

Can students retake APL courses?

No. Students are registered automatically in the appropriate APL course with their adviser as instructor. Since passing APL courses is not required for graduation, and a grade of no credit does not figure in a student's cumulative gpa, there is no compelling reason to allow repeats.

Can first and second year students change their advisers at any time? If they change in the middle of the semester, then which adviser is responsible for supervising their work in the APL course?

Provided they have the consent of the new adviser, students are allowed to change advisers at any time. The new change of adviser form asks students to indicate whether the new or the old adviser will be responsible for supervising the APL course in which the student is currently enrolled. Registration in the APL course will not be switched to the new adviser unless she or he indicates approval for such a change by signing in the appropriate spot on the new change of adviser form.

At what point in their careers are students expected to declare a major?

We hope that students will complete the academic planning portfolio and declare a major by the end of the second year. However, students are not required to declare a major until the sum of the credits a student has taken and the credits the student is enrolled in exceeds 72 credits. At that point, students who have not declared a major are not allowed to register for courses in the next semester.

At what point are students allowed to declare a major?

Sophomores may declare a major before completing the APL sequence provided they have the consent of the major program chair and have found an adviser in their major.

If a student in my current APL 202 isn't accepted into a major, or doesn't apply to one, or doesn't get a new major advisor even if they are accepted into the new major, do they remain my advisee in the fall?

Students must find an adviser in their major department when they register for the major. If a sophomore student doesn't declare a major and doesn't find a new adviser, you will be his or her adviser in the fall. However, if at any point, a student has completed or is registered for more than 71 credits, and she or he hasn't declared a major, then she or he will not be allowed to register for classes in the next semester.

If a student declares a major before completing the APL sequence (before the end of the sophomore year), who is the instructor for the APL courses?

The new declaration of major form asks students who have not completed the APL sequence to indicate whether the new or the old adviser will be responsible for supervising the APL course in which the student is currently enrolled. Registration in the APL course will not be switched to the new adviser unless the new adviser indicates approval for such a change by signing in the appropriate spot on the declaration of major form.

What happens with the Academic Planning Portfolio (APP) at the end of the sophomore year?

A copy of the documents a student creates for the Academic Planning Portfolio should be retained in the file on the student maintained by the adviser. When the student changes advisers, the APP documents should be sent to the new adviser along with the file.

How can I tell with which class my advisees will register?

In any semester, if the number of credits a student has completed plus the number of credits he or she is registered for is 28 or more, he or she will register as a sophomore; if it is 60 or more, he or she will register as a junior; if it is 92 or more he or she registers as a senior.
