The academic planning process spans the first four semesters and assists students in choosing a program of study and articulating a rationale for their choices that is appropriate to their unique situations. As part of the planning process, each semester students are asked to reflect on their goals and past work, make connections within or beyond the Allegheny community, and further develop educational plans that reflect their interests and experiences. The result is an Academic Planning Portfolio that charts the development of students' academic plans.
Beginning the planning portfolio is an integral part of FS 101, and further development takes place in the subsequent advising courses: APL 102, 201, and 202. In the accompanying documents, we provide model syllabi and assignments for the advising portion of each course. They include assignments and reflect a structure for advising that students report has been most helpful to their development.
